Many cooks have been influenced by Julia Child’s work. Sara Moulton, a chef with her own cooking show on PBS called Sara’s Weeknight, was inspired by Julia. She worked on Julia’s TV show, Julia and More Company, and said that the best lessons that Julia Child taught her were, “You never stop learning. You must always strive for excellence. It is okay to make a mistake because then you can show how to fix it. You should always be working and preferably at several jobs. Don’t let anything or anyone get in the way of pursuing what you want. Cooking is fun!” ~Julia Child. Another person that Julia Child influenced was Marilyn Mellowes. Marilyn said, at her filmmaker interview, "Julia was a larger-than-life figure who revolutionized the way that Americans ate, talked, and thought about food.”(pbs.org/wnet)
Julia Child's legacy of women teaching women is going on today in Yangon, Myanmar. Naomi Pomeroy, a professional chef, traveled to Myanmar on a trip for the U.S Culinary Corps. She met up with Heatherly Bucher and crew who are starting a social enterprise called the Yangon Bakehouse. Their plan is to hire women in Myanmar who are unemployed and teach them how to cook and run a business. After they have learned this skill, they will have the necessary knowledge to work in the culinary profession. Their motto is: "Change Women's Lives, Change the Future." While there, Naomi helped them with their Dine and Donate fundraiser and educated the apprentices in the art of cooking in a professional kitchen.
