CookbooksJulia Child's passion for teaching others to cook led her to Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle who needed an American to collaborate on their book. The end result of their work was Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It was written to teach American women specific cooking techniques to cook elegant and sophisticated meals. "French cooking is a wonderful way to treat food," says Child, "all it really is, is just good cooking." It was written for the servantless American home cook. "It is her thesis that French dishes are superior not because they are fancy but because they are logical, simple, and good." (time.com). The book gave them complete instructions that allowed them to prepare French cuisine. Julia taught basic skills like how to use a knife and when to use a stock pot or a frying pan. She taught what ingredients to purchase for different food preparations. The cookbook was published in 1961. About 300,000 copies of Mastering the Art of French Cooking have been sold as of 2012. Another book that Julia Child wrote was The French Chef Cookbook. This book was based off of her show, The French Chef. Julia Child never stopped perfecting her cooking art and wrote many other cookbooks in her lifetime. "In her late 70's and 80's she collaborated with a young, talented director and producer, Geof Drummond, to make four new series - Cooking with Master Chefs, In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs, Baking with Julia, and with her good friend Jacques Pepin, Jacques and Julia at Home. Each series was accompanied by a companion book." (pbs.org/wnet)
